Supporter Discovers Giving as Bridge to the Future

Jenny Kallis

After learning about philanthropy in an online talk, Jenny Kallis made a gift of real estate to UC San Diego that will benefit the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Jenny Kallis came to the realization that her 1920s Venice home and office could not only be a nest for today, but also a way to leave a positive mark on the planet tomorrow.

A revelation came in the form of a TED Talk-a short online talk aimed at sharing a new idea with the public.

"The speaker described philanthropy in a way that made it seem possible for anyone to participate," says Jenny.

Through estate planning, you can choose the future of your money today, and you can divide it up in many ways. You can leave some for family and some for friends, but you can also create a bridge to the future.

Two for One!

"Not only can I can enjoy living in my home today, but I can also use the equity to be a positive influence on the future. That is awesome. I love knowing that all of my work is paying me twice, and I have found greater fulfillment from the work I do," she says.

Her chosen cause: the ocean. Vast, beautiful, barely explored and possibly the key to cures and the future of life on earth.

"Scripps Institution of Oceanography is the perfect place to invest in the study and preservation of the ocean," says Jenny.

She feels that SIO is taking its commitment to ocean conservancy a step further with outreach education programs-stepping out from behind the science labs.

"Through SIO, I feel that I am touching the future and SIO is reaching back," she says.
